Birmingham's Aston Villa has made a sensational move, officially announcing the signing of a contract with 20-year-old Swiss midfielder Yoann Manzanambi. The young talent leaves German side Freiburg to continue his career at the legendary Villa Park stadium.
A New Record for the Birmingham Club
The transfer of Manzanambi has become a historic event for the "Lions." The deal is valued at approximately €70 million (slightly more than £50 million). This is an absolute record in the club's history, surpassing the previous achievement set just two years ago with the purchase of Amadou Onana for £50 million.
The Battle with Newcastle
The story of Manzanambi's transfer is full of intrigue. The Swiss footballer was effectively already a Newcastle player: the "Magpies" had fully agreed on the transfer with Freiburg for €60 million, and the player only needed to sign a personal contract. However, Aston Villa's management intervened in the process at the last moment, offering more favorable financial terms. This lightning-fast decision forced Manzanambi to change his plans and choose Unai Emery's team.
For Newcastle, this episode became the second serious failure of the current summer transfer window. Earlier, the club from Tyne and Wear missed out on former Real Madrid forward Victor Munoz, who was intercepted by Liverpool.
The Path to Success
Interest in Manzanambi is fueled by his outstanding achievements. In May, he faced Aston Villa in the Europa League final, where the English side won 3-0. Despite his team's defeat, the midfielder was named the best young player of the tournament. In the previous season with Freiburg, he scored seven goals and provided nine assists in 47 matches.
The player's market value has increased significantly after the 2026 World Cup. In four matches for the Swiss national team, Manzanambi scored three goals and made two assists, becoming one of the main discoveries of the tournament. Thanks to his contribution, the Swiss national team reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to Argentina 1-3 in extra time.
