On June 14, an incident occurred in Kharkiv that threatened the city's unique cultural heritage. During the day, Russian forces struck the building of the Kharkiv Art Museum with a drone. The incident required an immediate response from authorities and rescue services to prevent the irreversible loss of valuable exhibits.

Emergency Evacuation of Valuables

The threat of destroying the collection forced city authorities to make a radical decision. As Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported, specialists from the Department of Emergency Situations, together with rescuers, were forced to urgently evacuate cultural valuables to safe shelters.

The process of saving the paintings took place under high-risk conditions. Museum staff and rescuers quickly lowered the canvases to the storage vault to isolate them from a potential fire. According to the mayor, the main task was to preserve what constitutes the cultural code of the city.

Double Threat: Fire and Water

The situation in the museum was complicated not only by the direct risk of fire from the drone strike. Ihor Terekhov emphasized that there is a real threat of damage to exhibits from water during firefighting operations. Under such conditions, evacuation became the only way to protect masterpieces from destruction.

“These are values that we must preserve. There is a threat that some exhibits may burn, or they may simply be flooded during firefighting. Therefore, we had to evacuate them,” the city head noted.

Consequences for People

The tense atmosphere during the attack and the subsequent evacuation also affected people. Several individuals sought medical help due to acute stress reactions. The incident demonstrated that in the conditions of hostilities, not only material objects but also the psychological state of residents and cultural institution employees are under attack.
