An attack was carried out on the residents of the monastery on the territory of the Orthodox male monastery — the Dormition Svyatohorska Lavra in the Donetsk region. This was announced by the lavra's press service on the official website on 23 August 2026, late on the evening of Sunday. According to it, the incident took place in the area of the St. Nicholas Church, located within the monastery grounds. The incident became known at approximately 11:15: the wounded monk Gregory managed to make his way down to the brothers' dormitories and report what had happened. The monastic community immediately contacted the law enforcement authorities, after which the police arrived at the scene.
Victims and the condition of the injured
As a result of the attack, according to the lavra's press service, monk Varsonofiy (Turyansky) was killed. Two other people were wounded. Monk Gregory, as clarified at the monastery, sustained about four knife wounds, including a penetrating wound to the lung. Andriy Kyryienko was in a more serious condition — his lung was also wounded. Both of the wounded were taken to the hospital in the city of Slavyansk, where they received the necessary first medical aid, and were then transferred to Kharkiv for further treatment.
Law enforcement response and panikhida
A criminal case has been opened on the facts of the attack, and investigative actions are ongoing, the lavra's press service stated. On the same day, after the end of the all-night vigil in the Dormition Cathedral, the monastic community held a panikhida (memorial service) for the "newly departed slain monk Varsonofiy". The monastery called on everyone to pray for the slain monk and to offer prayers for the health and swift recovery of monk Gregory and Andriy Kyryienko.

The statements of the parties and media publications contain inconsistencies that should be taken into account. First, the lavra's press release refers to an attack on the "monastic community" and the "residents of the monastery", whereas a number of outlets (in particular, Focus) describe one of the wounded — Andriy Kyryienko — as a refugee, that is, a civilian, and not a monk. Thus, the question of whether the victims were exclusively members of the clergy or whether a civilian was also among the injured is formulated differently in the official and news versions. Second, the chronology is not entirely clear: the incident is dated "around 11 o'clock", while the official statement was published "late on the evening of Sunday". The exact time of the attack (11:00 or 23:00) and the length of the delay between the event and the publication of the press service's statement are not specified in the open text.
Context: a monastery on the front line and related incidents
The Svyatohorska Lavra is located in the frontline zone of the Donetsk region, which makes its territory vulnerable both militarily and criminally. Against the backdrop of this incident, Ukrainian outlets recalled a number of other acts of violence and destruction: the destruction by the Russians of a unique Cossack church in the Kherson region and the attack on the cathedral in Kherson (a 19th-century monument), as well as a knife attack on military personnel of the TCC and SP (military registration and conscription offices) in Volyn. It was separately noted that the abbot of the Svyatohorska Lavra had previously been formally charged and arrested. These events, however, are independent and are not directly linked to the attack on the monastic community under consideration.
