August is traditionally considered one of the most eventful months in the church calendar. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) has reminded the faithful of several important dates filled with deep spiritual meaning, tied to key moments in the earthly life of Jesus Christ. The church holidays of this month call for prayer, spiritual renewal, and gratitude.

Beginning of the Month: Honey Feast and Dormition Fast

The church calendar for August begins with solemn events. Already on August 1st, Orthodox communities commemorate the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. On this same day, the memory of the Holy Martyrs Maccabees, their mother Salome, and their teacher Eleazar is honored.

From the first day of the month, the two-week Dormition Fast begins, which will last until August 14th. Folk tradition calls this day the "first" or Honey Feast (also known as Makoveya or Feast on Water). The OCU emphasizes that this holiday reveals the divine glory of Christ and reminds every person of the call to spiritual change. By tradition, the fruits of the new harvest are consecrated on this day as a sign of gratitude to the Creator.

Apple Feast and the Dormition of the Theotokos

The middle of August marks one of the most significant periods. On August 15th, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. This is one of the greatest Theotokos holidays, symbolizing the victory of life over death and offering hope for eternity.

In folk tradition, this period is also associated with the "second" or Apple Feast (Holy Feast). The holiday is traditionally accompanied by the consecration of apples and other gifts of the earth.

Nut Feast and Veneration of Icons

The following day, August 16th, the faithful commemorate the transfer of the Image Not Made by Hands of the Lord Jesus Christ from Edessa to Constantinople. The Church explains that this holy relic testifies to the incarnation of the Son of God and highlights the special significance of icons in the life of Christians.

In folk tradition, this day is known as the "third" or Nut Feast. It is also known by the names Cold, Bread, or Linen Feast.

End of the Month: Strict Fasts and Memory of Saints

At the end of August, the church calendar offers days for special veneration and reflection:

  • On August 28th, the faithful honor the Council of the Holy Fathers of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, who departed in the Far Caves.
  • On August 29th, the Beheading of the Holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptizer of the Lord, John, is commemorated. On this day, the Church has established a strict one-day fast.

Representatives of the OCU call on Christians to use the August holidays to strengthen their faith and grow in love for God and their neighbors. According to church clergy, these days should bring peace, hope, and blessing to every family.
