On July 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed decrees imposing new sanctions, among which was former People's Deputy Boryslav Bereza. The ex-deputy reacted to the head of state's decision with irony, calling the situation a 'bingo'.

Reasons and consequences of the sanctions

According to Presidential Decrees No. 587/2026 and No. 588/2026, Boryslav Bereza was included in the sanctions list as a person supporting Russia's policy towards Ukraine, spreading Kremlin propaganda, and distorting facts. The President's Office did not specify the exact reasons why the former deputy was subjected to restrictions.

The new sanctions provide for the blocking of Bereza's financial assets, as well as restricting access to social media pages associated with him within the territory of Ukraine.

Boryslav Bereza's reaction

The former MP has already commented on Zelenskyy's decision, mentioning Russian President Vladimir Putin:

"Actually, having simultaneous sanctions from Putin and Zelenskyy is a bingo! I wonder how they will explain it? Because for exposing corruption and criticizing the authorities — it will be right on target," Bereza wrote.

Who is Boryslav Bereza?

Boryslav Bereza is a Ukrainian politician, public figure, and former People's Deputy of Ukraine of the VIII convocation. He gained wide recognition in 2014 when he became a representative of the 'Right Sector' party. That same year, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada as a non-partisan self-nominated candidate, after which he left the party and worked in parliament as a non-factional deputy.

During his parliamentary term, Bereza actively commented on issues of domestic policy, the fight against corruption, and the activities of government bodies. After leaving parliament, he continued his public activity as a political commentator and blogger.

Other sanctions and international context

By a separate decree, President Zelenskyy also imposed sanctions on suppliers of equipment for Russian enterprises producing components for missiles. This decision became part of a broader strategy to counter Russian aggression.

Earlier, RBK-Ukraine reported that the European Union may soon impose new sanctions against the Russian Federation. In addition, Bulgaria issued an ultimatum to Brussels over two Russians on the sanctions lists. Meanwhile, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, proposed supporting a ban on issuing EU visas to the Russian Patriarch.
