For the first time in five years of full-scale war, a high-ranking Western intelligence official has publicly disclosed the massive losses suffered by the Russian army. Anne Keast-Butler, head of the UK's GCHQ, stated during an annual lecture that Moscow has lost nearly half a million military personnel. This admission serves as a loud signal that the Kremlin's battlefield strategy is failing.

Figures That Change the Picture of the Conflict

The estimate of 500,000 people is not just statistics; it is an admission of the colossal depletion of Russia's human resources. Keast-Butler emphasized that Vladimir Putin is effectively retreating on the front lines. Previously, such figures were voiced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, pointing to the enemy's monthly losses of 30,000–35,000 fighters. Now, this data has found confirmation at the level of an ally's official intelligence.

The Office of the President of Ukraine does not rule out a scenario of general mobilization in the Russian Federation after the State Duma elections in 2026.
