Bronislava Nijinska Appears on the National Opera Facade: Where to Look for the New Mini-Sculpture

Kyiv has hosted the grand unveiling of the 54th bronze mini-sculpture as part of the popular cultural and historical project "Shukai!" (Search!), created by Yuliia Bevzenko. The new art object on the capital's streets is dedicated to the prominent dancer, innovator, and choreographer Bronislava Nijinska, who made an invaluable contribution to the development of 20th-century world ballet art.

Historical Significance of the "School of Movement" in Kyiv

Back in 1919, Bronislava Nijinska opened her own "School of Movement" in the Ukrainian capital. At this educational institution, she actively developed an advanced avant-garde choreographic language, striving to nurture not merely mechanical performers, but full-fledged artists capable of independent thought, feeling the music, and creating on stage. Among her talented students was Kyiv native Serge Lifar, who subsequently gained worldwide fame and became one of the most influential choreographers of his time.

Decolonization of Heritage and Modern Context

The authors and patrons of the project emphasize that the appearance of this miniature sculpture is an important act of restoring historical justice and decolonizing domestic cultural heritage. The patron of this initiative was Olha Morozenko, artistic director of the Tetyana Tayakina Kyiv State Professional Choreographic College and former soloist of the National Opera of Ukraine. According to her, returning Nijinska's name to her hometown during modern challenges symbolizes the resilience and continuity of generations of Ukrainian creators.

The bronze miniature of Bronislava Nijinska was installed on the historical facade of the National Opera of Ukraine at 5 Lysenko Street. The new symbol of the capital can be seen directly beneath the windows of the theater's rehearsal hall. The sculpture itself was crafted by talented master Yurii Biliavskyi, who embodied in metal the image of the legendary dancer, continuing to inspire contemporary artists despite all the challenges of wartime.
