In the history of automotive engineering, events that can be called the final period of an entire era are rare. However, this is exactly what happened in Molsheim when the last production car equipped with the legendary 8.0-liter W16 engine rolled off the Bugatti assembly line. This car was the Bugatti W16 Mistral roadster, which became not just a new model, but a monument to the most powerful production powertrain in the brand's history.

The End of Production

Officially, the company announced the end of production of the quad-turbo W16 engine. The Mistral became that final link in the chain, marking the departure from using this unique unit within standard production programs. The roadster, which debuted in August 2022, was initially positioned as a limited series: the model run was strictly limited to 99 units worldwide.

Each of these cars is not just a vehicle, but an engineering masterpiece. Under the hood of the final Mistral lies the most powerful version of the W16 engine, capable of producing 1,600 horsepower and 1,600 Nm of torque. For comparison: a similar powertrain was installed in the track hypercar Bugatti Bolide, which underscores the extreme potential of this machine.

Solitaire Program: Not a Complete Abandonment

Despite the end of production, Bugatti is not in a hurry to completely bury the W16 legend. Last year, the brand launched a unique initiative called Programme Solitaire. This program is created for the most demanding and wealthy clients who wish to own something absolutely unique.

As part of Solitaire, the company is ready to create exclusive cars or ultra-small series based on existing platforms, using remaining parts for W16 engines and Chiron chassis. Already within this initiative, such masterpieces as the Brouillard and Veyron FKP Hommage were created. Thus, although the production era of the W16 is closed, the possibility of ordering a unique car with this engine for select clients still exists.

A New Chapter: La Manufacture and Tourbillon

The end of W16 production coincided with an important strategic step for the brand — the opening of the new Bugatti La Manufacture production complex. This event symbolizes the company's transition to a new phase of development. The next generation of hypercars will be produced in the new workshops, with the Tourbillon model serving as the flagship.

The move away from the W16 to new solutions at La Manufacture marks a paradigm shift in Bugatti's approach to creating hypercars. However, the Mistral will remain in history as the last messenger of the era when 16 cylinders and four turbos were synonymous with absolute automotive power.
