In Chernihiv, a brazen attempt at a terrorist attack against military personnel has been foiled. Disguised as humanitarian aid and "support," a woman attempted to hand over a homemade explosive device, camouflaged as popular fast food, to soldiers at a checkpoint.
Brazen Attempt on the Outskirts of the City
The incident occurred at a checkpoint located on the exit from Chernihiv towards Kyiv. A civilian woman approached the post and, under the pretext of gratitude and support, handed the soldiers several bags of food from McDonald's. Immediately after handing over the "gift," the woman left the scene.
The situation could have ended in tragedy had it not been for the strict adherence to protocol. Upon receiving the package, the military personnel immediately moved the bags to a safe distance from people and the checkpoint territory. It was this action that saved the lives of the personnel: upon inspection, a homemade explosive device was found inside one of the burgers.
Arrest and Investigation
Operatives of the National Police, together with employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and prosecutors, quickly located and detained the suspect. Law enforcement officers are currently conducting necessary procedural actions.
As reported by the police of the Chernihiv region, SBU investigators, under the procedural guidance of the prosecution, are resolving the issue of notifying the detainee of suspicion. More details of the case, including the motives and possible connections of the suspect, will be made public later.
Context: Rise in Sabotage Activity
This incident is not an isolated case. Law enforcement agencies are recording an increase in attempts of sabotage against military and civilian infrastructure. We remind you that recently in Mykolaiv, the SBU counter-intelligence detained an agent of Russian special services who attempted to plant explosives under a Ukrainian military vehicle. Also, earlier in Ivano-Frankivsk, special services prevented a double explosion in the courtyard of a residential complex.
