On the night of October 27, 2026, the air temperature in the highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians dropped significantly below zero. Snow blanketed the peaks, and precipitation continued in some places even in the morning. According to Carpathian mountain rescuers, as of 8:00 a.m., Pip Ivan mountain was cloudy with a northeast wind blowing at 17 meters per second. "A little snow has fallen," the rescuers reported on their Facebook page, publishing a corresponding photo from the summit.
Snow "blankets" Dragobrat
Fresh snow, according to local Telegram channels "SNIH News" and "Dragobrat INSIDER", "blanketed the slopes, trees, and roofs of buildings" at the Dragobrat resort. The snow cover was particularly noticeable on the trail near the "Oaza" sports and tourist complex, where morning hours brought fog and sub-zero temperatures. The Facebook publication "All Transcarpathian Truth" called this event "the first real breath of winter," emphasizing that while the lowlands of Transcarpathia retain autumn landscapes, the highlands are already welcoming the first serious winter surprises.
SES confirms deteriorating weather
The press service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast confirmed on Facebook that weather conditions in the mountains are deteriorating. The agency appealed to vacationers and tourists with a warning: "Take care of yourself and remember: the mountains do not forgive recklessness." This is a standard but important caveat for the season when people unprepared for low temperatures and slippery surfaces begin to take to trails and mountain roads.
Forecast for October 27 and the current week
According to the forecast from the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Center for Hydrometeorology, cloudy weather with clear intervals is expected across the region on October 27, with a northwest wind of 7–12 m/s. Medical and meteorological conditions are rated as type 2, and visibility on roads is 4–6 km. Forecasters also released a forecast for the current week (October 27–30), which, according to their data, will remain cool and changeable.
Context: early winter in the Carpathians is not uncommon
It is worth noting that early snowfalls and frosts on the peaks of Chornohora and Pip Ivan are not exceptional phenomena for the region. As mountain rescuers have previously noted, a similar "winter" picture in the highlands occasionally repeats itself even in late spring and early autumn, when sub-zero temperatures and snowfalls are recorded on the peaks alongside relatively warm weather in the lowlands. Thus, the situation recorded on October 27 fits into the usual Carpathian scenario of seasonal contrasts between the foothills and the highlands.
