A formal ceremony for the transfer of command of the Multinational Forces for Ukraine took place at the operational headquarters in Paris. The new head of the structure is British Lieutenant General Tom Beithman, who has replaced his French predecessor. The event occurred against the backdrop of active preparations for the large-scale "Coalition of the Willing" exercises.
A New Phase of International Command
The change in leadership coincided with an important political signal: the day before, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, confirmed London's unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine. In his statement, he also emphasized the need for joint leadership by Britain and France within the "Coalition of the Willing".
Tom Beithman, upon taking command, noted the continuity of work and highly praised the efforts of the previous team. "It is a great honor for me to take over command of the Multinational Forces for Ukraine here, at its operational headquarters in Paris. Building on the excellent work of my predecessor and his team, we will continue to work closely with our Ukrainian and international partners to prepare forces that will help ensure a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine," the general stated.
Strategic Tasks: From Restoration to Security
The UK Ministry of Defence has clearly outlined two key missions facing the new command. First, this is the restoration of the potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This implies not only intensive training of military personnel but also the systematic replenishment of weapon and equipment stocks. The goal is to bring Ukrainian troops to a state that allows them to effectively deter Russian aggression.
Second, the structure takes on tasks related to ensuring security. In particular, this refers to patrolling air and maritime space. According to representatives of the British military department, such measures are necessary to provide Ukraine with guarantees that will become the foundation for restoring commercial air traffic, reviving the economy, and attracting international investment.
Context: Exercises and Changes in the Coalition
Beithman's appointment comes during the active phase of preparations for the first major exercises of the "Coalition of the Willing". As Donald Tusk previously announced, the maneuvers will focus on practicing scenarios for the deployment of foreign forces directly on the territory of Ukraine.
However, the process of consolidating Western support is not without difficulties. It recently became known that one of the European Union countries decided to withdraw from the "Coalition of the Willing" and completely stop military aid to Kyiv. Despite this, London and Paris continue to insist on maintaining and strengthening the multinational structure under new British leadership.
