On Monday, August 24, Russian occupiers launched a drone attack on Chernihiv. According to RBC-Ukraine, citing Chernihiv Oblast Military Administration (MA) head Dmytro Bryzhynskyi and a statement from the Chernihiv City Council, the target of the strike was a high-rise residential complex in the central part of the city. The city council's statement, in particular, noted: "A hit by an enemy drone has been recorded in the central part of the city. Information is being verified." Bryzhynskyi confirmed that a Russian drone struck a multi-story building directly, resulting in a fire.
Authorities' Response and Emergency Services' Work
Immediately after the strike, all emergency services rushed to the scene. Head of the Chernihiv Oblast State Administration (OSA), Mykola Chernichuk, reported that rescuers were working to extinguish the fire at the drone's impact site, medical personnel were providing the necessary aid to the injured, and all relevant units were present at the incident site. According to him, the consequences of the strike were still being assessed at the time of the statement. Later, the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations (SES) reported that the fire had been fully extinguished, allowing a transition to the stage of damage assessment and assistance to the building's residents.
Injured and Medical Consequences
According to preliminary information provided by Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, 14 people were injured as a result of the enemy attack, including two children aged 12 and 17. Three of the injured were hospitalized, while another 11 sustained minor injuries and received medical assistance directly at the scene. Thus, the strike on the residential high-rise in the city center led to mass casualties among people who were in the building at the time of the attack, underscoring the systemic threat that drone strikes on civilian objects pose to the residents of Chernihiv.

In assessing the number of injured, a discrepancy in the figures has been recorded in the statements of officials, related to the gradual refinement of information. Head of the Chernihiv Oblast MA, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, initially reported 14 injured, including two children (aged 12 and 17). However, the SES later updated the data, stating that the number of injured had risen to 15, including two children. Thus, the early-stage figure of 14 injured was revised upward to 15 as work at the scene was completed and all those needing assistance were counted. The difference is explained by the dynamics of information gathering in the first hours after the strike, rather than a contradiction in the fact of the incident itself, which is confirmed by all sources.

The August 24 incident occurs against the backdrop of a sustained escalation of attacks on Chernihiv Oblast. Recall that on August 17, Russia struck an energy facility in Chernihiv, leaving more than 10,000 subscribers without electricity. It was previously reported that Russian occupiers began massively striking Chernihiv Oblast with jet-powered drones: in early August, a large number of "Banderoles" — hybrid aircraft combining the characteristics of a cruise missile and a drone — reached the region. The strike on the residential high-rise in the city center became yet another episode of deliberate pressure on the region's civilian infrastructure and population.
