Belgorod-Dnestrovsky (Akkerman) has once again become a target of an attack. On Children's Day, June 1, 2026, a Shahed suicide drone struck the city. The explosion occurred in close proximity to the maternity and obstetrics-gynecology department of the multi-profile hospital. This is already the second incident since the full-scale war began where the walls where new life begins have come under fire.
Fortunately, tragedy was averted thanks to the prompt actions of the staff. Everyone in the hospital was evacuated to the basement in time, which is currently the only equipped shelter in the maternity ward. In this basement, where silence reigned, broken only by the wail of sirens, a woman in labor gave birth to a girl weighing 2700 grams.
Vitaly Zhnyakin, General Director of the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Multi-Profile Hospital, clarified that at the time of the alarm, there were six mothers in labor and six children in the inpatient ward. Another woman was in the process of giving birth, and two patients were in the pathology department under the supervision of doctors. No one was injured, and medical or psychological assistance was not required.
However, the material damage from the attack is obvious. Around the hospital, where signs of gratitude for sons used to hang, shards of shattered windows now scatter. According to Vitaly Zhnyakin, damage to wards, medical equipment, and window and door blocks has been recorded. Staff are currently conducting a detailed inspection of all premises to draw up reports and determine the full extent of the destruction.
Despite the incident, the maternity ward continues to operate in normal mode. The delivery room is ready to receive new patients, and mothers with children are already in the intact wards. Law enforcement agencies are working at the scene to record the circumstances of the attack.
