«No, this will not happen»: China categorically assured Finland of Russia's refusal to use nuclear weapons

In Beijing, it is believed that Russia will not resort to the use of nuclear weapons, even if it finds itself in a desperate situation. This statement was made by the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, who shared the results of a recent dialogue with the leadership of the PRC. This information came from the Finnish leader in an interview with CNBC and was distributed by the RBC-Ukraine agency.

Categorical response from Beijing

Stubb commented on a direct question from journalists about the possibility of Vladimir Putin using the nuclear arsenal. The head of state called this question «correct and direct» and talked about a meeting that took place just two days ago. During a dinner in Finland, Stubb received the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, with whom the nuclear agenda was discussed.

Escalation risks remain

Despite the confident assurances of Chinese partners, Alexander Stubb urged not to relax. The Finnish leader emphasized that the risk of escalation cannot be completely ruled out. According to him, it is critically important to contain the situation, but the danger remains real and must be treated with due attention.

Context: ultimatum to the Kremlin

Stubb's statement echoes information previously voiced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The head of the Ukrainian state reported that several European leaders learned about a «stern warning» from Beijing to Moscow during the NATO summit in Ankara. According to Zelenskyy, the Chinese side stated for the first time in an ultimatum form to the Kremlin that any talk of using nuclear weapons is unacceptable.

Previously, China has already taken a principled position on this issue, refuting Moscow's statements about France and the UK transferring nuclear technology to Ukraine. In Beijing, they repeatedly insisted that the use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable under any circumstances.
