China Mobile Hong Kong has announced the completion of the deployment of Hong Kong's first cellular network in the U6GHz band — the upper 6 GHz segment. Simultaneously, the operator conducted equipment trials at its flagship store in the Mong Kok district, testing base station operations and the compatibility of user devices with the new frequency range. The company emphasizes that the goal of the tests is to evaluate the potential of the upper 6 GHz band for enhancing mobile communication performance and preparing infrastructure for next-generation technologies.
First Network in the Upper 6 GHz Band
The U6GHz band is viewed by the industry as a key resource for the development of the 5G-Advanced standard and future 6G networks, primarily due to the wide frequency bands available within it. It is this wide bandwidth that enables the creation of high-capacity channels that are difficult to secure in lower frequency ranges. The deployment in Hong Kong has become a practical confirmation that operators are beginning to transition from theoretical discussions to actual field trials of equipment in this segment.
Context: The 2024 Auction and 100 MHz of Continuous Spectrum
The foundation for the current trials was the spectrum allocation auction for the 6 and 7 GHz bands held in Hong Kong in November 2024. According to the company, the region was the first to organize bidding for frequencies in this range specifically for mobile communications. Following the auction, China Mobile Hong Kong secured a continuous 100 MHz block of spectrum and has since been consistently testing network capabilities and device compatibility with the new band.
Spectrum Aggregation and Speeds Exceeding 3 Gbps
According to the operator, the new band can be combined with currently used frequencies using spectrum aggregation. It is precisely through this aggregation, the company reports, that download speeds exceeding 3 Gbps are achieved. Additional frequency resources are expected to increase overall network capacity, improve communication quality in crowded areas, and enhance high-definition video transmission.
Regional Context: Demonstration in Macau
On the same day, China Telecom in Macau announced the installation of a U6GHz demonstration base station and the launch of field trials. The coincidence in the timing of announcements by two operators in neighboring jurisdictions indicates that the upper 6 GHz band is becoming a shared direction for infrastructure development in southern China rather than a solitary experiment by a single operator.
Prospects for 5G-Advanced and 6G
For the industry, the deployment in Hong Kong is important as an early benchmark of how the upper 6 GHz band will be integrated into existing networks. Aggregation with current frequencies, increased bandwidth, and improved performance under high loads are precisely the parameters that determine infrastructure readiness for the transition to 5G-Advanced and the subsequent introduction of 6G. Further dynamics will depend on the results of field trials and the pace at which compatible user devices emerge.
