The football world has breathed a sigh of relief. Christian Eriksen, the Danish national team midfielder, has publicly commented on his condition for the first time after losing consciousness during a friendly match against the national team of Ukraine. The Danish star addressed fans via his personal Instagram to allay fears and calm the football community.
'It was a different situation'
In his message, Eriksen emphasized that the situation is under full control of specialists. He assured everyone that he is currently at home with his family and feels well. The footballer admitted that the activation of his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was a serious test for both him and his loved ones.
'I want to let everyone know that I am doing well... As you can probably imagine, the shock from my implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) had a significant impact on both me and my family, but I want to assure everyone that this was a different situation than what happened in 2021. I feel good, and my recovery has already begun,' the athlete wrote.
Gratitude to doctors and rescuers
Eriksen expressed deep gratitude to everyone who acted promptly at the critical moment on the field. He gave special thanks to the medical team that has cared for his heart for many years. According to the player, it was thanks to the doctors' experience that the defibrillator worked as intended: it saved the footballer's life at the moment it was needed.
History repeating and current plans
This incident became the second similar case in the Dane's career. A reminder of the past: on June 12, 2021, during Euro 2020 against Finland, Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest. It was after that dramatic episode that he was fitted with a defibrillator.
On Sunday, June 7, during the friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, in the middle of the second half, the midfielder suddenly collapsed on the pitch. Medical staff rushed onto the field immediately, and the match was stopped early by agreement between the coaching staffs. Eriksen regained consciousness and left the stadium on his own. The game was not completed; the final whistle recorded a score of 2-1 in favor of the Scandinavians.
At the moment, the footballer has decided to completely disconnect from the sports regime. His priorities now are rest, time with loved ones, vacation, and ordinary football games with his children.
