A scandal capable of overturning perceptions of internal security within intelligence agencies has erupted in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested a high-ranking official of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The trigger was a search of the agent's private residence, where investigators discovered a veritable treasure trove: 303 kilograms of gold bars, a collection of luxury watches, and millions of dollars in cash.
Treasure Trove in a Private Home
The scale of the discovery shocks even experienced investigators. 303 gold bars, each weighing approximately one kilogram, were seized from the detainee's residence. The market value of this metal is estimated at over $40 million. However, gold was not the only wealth hidden in the house. Safes and storage units contained nearly three dozen premium brand watches, predominantly Rolex, as well as $2 million in paper currency.
Charges Disproportionate to the Scale of the Theft
Despite the colossal value of the seized property, the official charges sound rather mundane. The man is accused of embezzling state funds through the falsification of time sheets. According to the prosecution, the official illegally received salary for periods when he allegedly did not perform official duties. However, the amounts obtained in this manner cannot in any way explain the presence of tens of millions of dollars in gold and cash in the house.
How the CIA's Gold Disappeared
The investigation's history dates back to last year. At that time, an official holding a leadership position in the top intelligence service began requesting huge sums of currency and gold, arguing that it was necessary for work tasks. An internal CIA audit revealed a strange picture: gold that should have been stored in warehouses had vanished without a trace. Only later did the investigative trail lead to the employee's private home, where the entire stock was found.
Court documents still do not answer the main question: for which specific secret project could more than 300 kilograms of gold have been needed? The detainee's lawyer is currently refraining from comment, leaving the situation in the shadows. CIA Director John Ratcliffe, upon learning the results of the internal investigation, immediately transferred the case to the FBI for criminal prosecution.
