On October 16, a noticeable cold snap hits Ukraine, which meteorologists attribute to the transition to steady autumn weather. According to the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, reported by RBC-Ukraine, the day will be mostly cloudy, with moderate rains expected in most regions. In the Carpathian mountains, precipitation will occasionally be accompanied by wet snow, while in the south of the country the weather will remain drier, with no precipitation forecast for most southern oblasts.
Temperature Background by Region
Daytime temperatures in most oblasts will range from 8 to 13 degrees Celsius. On the Left Bank, the air will warm up more, reaching 13–18 °C, making this region one of the warmest during the current day. In the Carpathians, by contrast, thermometers will rise to only 1–6 °C, which is typical for mountainous terrain in mid-October. The wind will be predominantly northerly, and in the eastern part of the country easterly, at 5–10 m/s, which does not promise sharp gusts but will intensify the feeling of chill.
Frosts in the West: Is There Cause for Concern?
Natalia Ptukha, a representative of the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, clarified that local frosts on the soil surface are possible in the western oblasts. At the same time, according to her, there are no prerequisites for severe frosts capable of damaging agriculture. This means that the cold snap is local and limited in nature and does not turn into a widespread anomaly.
Broader Picture: How Autumn 2026 is Shaping Up
The current cold snap fits into a broader scenario described by meteorologists for the second half of autumn. According to the forecast by Vazira Martazinova, a leading researcher at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute, October as a whole remains mild and favorable: on certain days, daytime temperatures may drop to around +10 °C, which aligns with today's readings. After a relatively warm November, winter, in her estimation, will be contrasting but without pronounced anomalies, and the most noticeable, albeit short-lived, cold snap is modeled by the forecast for January already.
Thus, October 16 becomes the turning point where the mild first half of October gives way to cooler and wetter weather. Residents of the western and mountainous regions should take into account the possibility of ground frosts and sleet, while the Left Bank and the south will remain among the warmer parts of the country for the day.
