May, traditionally considered a month of warmth and sunshine, has decided to offer Ukrainians an unexpected surprise this year. Instead of the long-awaited summer, on May 30, the country was hit by a real "storm in a teacup": cool air, prolonged rains, and thunderstorm fronts.
According to data from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, the weather on this day will be extremely capricious. The sky over most of Ukraine is covered with clouds, through which the sun only occasionally peeks through. Short-term rains will accompany almost every region, turning walks into a real test of endurance.
Where to Expect Stormy Weather?
Residents of the southern and eastern regions require special attention. It is here that meteorologists forecast the development of thunderstorm activity during the day. The wind, blowing predominantly from the northwest, will gain speed. In the southwestern regions, gusts may reach a considerable 15–20 m/s, requiring special caution when parking cars and staying under trees.
The temperature background will also lag behind the climate norm. At night, the air will cool down to +4...+9°C, and during the day, it will warm up only to +11...+16°C. The feeling of real summer will remain only in the far west of the country: in Zakarpattia, thermometers may show up to +24°C, while in Kyiv and the region, the columns will be limited to comfortable but cool +14...+16°C.
Consequences of the Atmospheric Front
This sharp weather jump is not a coincidence but the result of the passage of a powerful atmospheric front. Earlier, meteorologists warned of a cooling, and the forecast came true with a vengeance. The front brought not only downpours but also stormy winds, and in some areas even hail, which caused damage to infrastructure and vehicles.
Despite the fact that June is already asserting its rights, nature is not in a hurry to part with the spring coolness. Meteorologists are already preparing preliminary forecasts for the next month, but today Ukrainians should stock up on umbrellas and warm clothes to survive this "cold" May day.
