Biotech company Colossal Biosciences, known for its ambitious projects to resurrect extinct species, has announced a move to a new level. The startup has signed a strategic agreement with the US government aimed at creating a large-scale digital cryogenic DNA archive to protect species on the brink of extinction.

Urgency of the Task: Threat Statistics

The necessity of such measures is dictated by an alarming trend. According to current data, the US Endangered Species Act protects 1,662 domestic and 638 foreign species. Despite historical successes in restoring populations of national symbols, such as the bald eagle or the grizzly bear, the overall situation is deteriorating. Since 1985, the list of threatened species has expanded by 300%.

Rescue Mechanics: The BioVault Network

The financial and technical burden of implementing the project will be taken on by the startup's non-profit wing — the Colossal Foundation. Since its founding at the end of 2024, the organization has accumulated about $100 million in donations.

The action plan includes the creation of a distributed network of BioVault storage facilities. In these facilities, DNA, tissues, and reproductive cells will be collected and frozen. In parallel with physical cryopreservation, the foundation plans to create detailed digital "reference genomes".

Principle of Open Data

The main feature of the initiative is full transparency. Representatives of the foundation confirmed that all genetic information collected within the framework of the project will be uploaded for free to open repositories. This will allow scientists and ecologists around the world to use the data for research and restoration programs.

Funding and Ambitions

The large-scale development plan for the BioVault network was announced in February of this year. It was the result of a major agreement with the United Arab Emirates, which invested at least $60 million in the biotech startup.

Colossal CEO Ben Lamm compares his project to a "modern Noah's Ark" or the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. According to him, every biological species represents a unique library of evolutionary innovations created over millions of years, and the loss of this knowledge is unacceptable.

Balance Between Charity and Business

Despite the charitable status of the current agreement with the US government, the company has not yet revealed details of the future commercialization of frozen cell lines. However, Colossal Biosciences already has experience bringing developments to market through subsidiary commercial enterprises:

  • Form Bio (founded in 2022): licenses proprietary software for deep genetic analysis.
  • Breaking (founded in 2024): engages in bioengineering of microorganisms capable of breaking down plastic waste on an industrial scale.

The company is convinced that a combination of market mechanisms and global environmental commitments will leave future generations not just field notes and photos of extinct animals, but real tools for restoring the planet's biodiversity.
