The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has published the official exchange rates for Thursday, July 23. The foreign exchange market is showing divergent trends: the US dollar continued to rise, while the European currency demonstrated a decline in value.

Exchange rate dynamics: dollar rises, euro falls

The official exchange rate of the US dollar on July 23 was set at 44.77 hryvnias. This is 2 kopecks higher than the previous day's figure, when the American currency cost 44.75 hryvnias. Thus, the trend of dollar strengthening following a slight increase on Tuesday continues.

At the same time, the euro showed the opposite trend. The official exchange rate of the European currency was 51.06 hryvnias, which is 3 kopecks lower than Wednesday's rate (51.09 hryvnias). Despite the divergent movement of major currencies, the hryvnia remains under the regulator's watch, which is also monitoring the state of the cash market.

Cash market structure: dominance of large denominations

The National Bank of Ukraine presented data on the state of cash circulation as of July 1, 2026. There were 970.8 billion hryvnias in circulation, equivalent to 2.6 billion banknotes and 15.3 billion coins. On average, each resident of the country has 64 banknotes and 197 coins.

An analysis of the circulation structure revealed interesting public preferences:

  • The most popular banknote: The 500 hryvnia banknote is the most common among Ukrainians. It accounts for 25.8% of the total number of banknotes in circulation.
  • The least in demand: 50 hryvnia banknotes turned out to be the least popular, accounting for only 4.5%.
  • Growth of large denominations: There is a rapid growth in the share of 1000 hryvnia banknotes. In terms of total value, they have already exceeded 55% of the entire cash market.

New banknote: 2000 hryvnias

In connection with the change in the structure of money circulation and the dominance of large denominations, the regulator decided to expand the nominal range of the national currency. The National Bank of Ukraine officially announced that starting September 4, 2026, a new banknote with a face value of 2000 hryvnias will be introduced into circulation. This decision aims to optimize cash circulation and take into account the economy's needs for large banknotes.
