24-year-old Ukrainian tennis player Daria Snigur has entered the WTA top 50 ranking for the first time in her career. This was made possible thanks to successful performances at Wimbledon and the WTA 250 tournament in Prague. For the athlete herself, the Wimbledon journey left the strongest impression — reaching the third round of one of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year.
Final in Prague: a result that surprised Daria herself
At the WTA 250 tournament in Prague, Snigur reached the final despite extremely tight preparation time — just five days. In the decisive match, she lost to Austrian Lilli Tagger with a score of 6:7, 2:6. The tennis player admits that she has not yet analyzed the game with her coach, but already notes that reaching the final was a pleasant surprise for her.
"Considering my preparation, which lasted only 5 days, of course, I am very satisfied with my result in Prague. Therefore, I am proud of myself that in such a short time we with the team were able to prepare for the tournament," — Snigur told Sport RBC.UA in an interview.
Wimbledon is more important: why the "Slam" is valued higher
Despite the success in Prague, Daria emphasizes that her performance at Wimbledon has greater significance. According to her, many WTA tournaments are held throughout the year, while there are only four "Slams". That is why reaching the third round of Wimbledon became her key achievement of the season.
At Wimbledon, Snigur defeated Elina Svitolina (7:5, 6:2) and Leošie Jeanjean (6:4, 6:3) in turn, and lost to Ashlyn Kruger (3:6, 2:6) in the third round.
New milestone: Snigur and Oliynykova — in the top 50
At the beginning of this week, Daria Snigur and Alexandra Oliynykova updated their personal records in the WTA ranking — both athletes entered the top 50 best tennis players in the world for the first time. This was made possible thanks to stable results at major tournaments and the growth of playing form.
For Ukrainian tennis, this is a significant step — the presence of two representatives in the top 50 indicates the development of the national school and the emergence of new world-class stars.
