Negotiations over the "deal of the century" resume
The issue of transferring Soviet-made fighters to Ukraine, which has been in limbo for a long time, has gained momentum again. At the center of attention is the exchange of Polish MiG-29s for advanced Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle technologies. According to Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Warsaw sees real chances that this process will conclude successfully.
An official representative of the Polish defense department confirmed that the parties are currently discussing a specific and clear proposal. The essence of the deal remains the same: combat aircraft in exchange for drone technologies. Despite a pause in negotiations that lasted several months, the dialogue has resumed, which, according to Kosiniak-Kamysz, is a positive signal.
The history of long negotiations
The path to this potential deal has been difficult. As the minister explained, the Ukrainian side initially agreed to Warsaw's terms but then requested time for further consideration. This period of uncertainty led to the fact that the issue of transferring the aircraft was effectively frozen.
The situation began to change only recently. Kyiv has returned to actively discussing the details of the exchange. "Now they are negotiating again — and that is good. I hope this proposal will be successfully brought to a conclusion," emphasized the head of the Polish military department.
Risks of scrapping the equipment
Before the resumption of dialogue, the situation seemed critical for the implementation of this project. Media reports appeared stating that Poland might decide to fully scrap the MiG-29 fighters instead of transferring them to the Ukrainian army. Warsaw argued this by stating that the conditions previously put forward were not met by the Ukrainian side.
As early as June, Polish authorities officially suspended the process of transferring the remnants of their fighters. The official explanation was the expectation of resolving a number of technical and political issues from Kyiv. At the same time, the Polish Minister of Defense repeatedly stated that the issue remains unresolved, despite the existence of an official request from the Ukrainian side.
What's next?
Now everything depends on how quickly the parties can agree on the details of the deal. If the negotiations are successful, Ukraine will gain access to modern fighters, while Poland will gain access to unique drone technologies that could become an important element of its defense strategy. However, if the dialogue hits a dead end again, the fate of these aircraft may be decided in favor of their disposal.
