Death in the corridors of the TCC: a conscript died during the medical examination in the Zhytomyr region

On August 6, 2026, a tragedy occurred in the Korosten district of the Zhytomyr region, once again drawing public attention to issues of safety and conditions for conscripts in Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centers (TCC). A man born in 1980, brought to the TCC for a military-medical commission (MMC), suddenly lost consciousness and subsequently died from cardiac arrest. Despite the rapid response of medical personnel, saving his life was not possible.

Chronology of events: from detention to death

According to an official statement from the Zhytomyr Regional TCC and Social Support Center, the incident occurred during a routine document check. The conscript was stopped by TCC employees together with police officers. During the check, it was found that the man had violated military registration rules and was subject to mobilization as a reserve officer. After this, he was taken to the Korosten District TCC for a mandatory medical examination.

The results of the MMC showed that the citizen was deemed fit for service in support, logistics, and communications units. However, at 14:38, while on the premises of the institution, the man suddenly lost consciousness. Center staff immediately called an ambulance, which arrived at the scene at 14:46. Resuscitation measures were carried out already in the ambulance, but, unfortunately, they were unsuccessful — the doctors pronounced the patient dead.

Official version: sudden cardiac arrest

Preliminary data suggests that the cause of death was sudden cardiac arrest. Upon external examination of the body, no visible physical injuries were found. This allowed law enforcement agencies and TCC employees to assume that death occurred due to natural causes related to the man's health condition.

However, the final conclusion will only be made after a forensic medical examination. Currently, an internal investigation has been ordered regarding the death, and a criminal case has been opened. Information about it has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations. The Zhytomyr Regional TCC stated its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies and readiness to provide any necessary assistance during the investigation.

Contradictory data

Although the official version of events points to natural causes of death, doubts may arise in society and among the deceased's relatives. Previously, in similar cases, for example, in Zakarpattia, families of deceased conscripts claimed that their loved ones were subjected to beatings and torture in TCCs, which led to a fatal outcome. At the same time, TCCs and law enforcement agencies denied these accusations, citing the absence of bruising traces and examination results.

In this case, despite the absence of visible injuries, some experts and human rights activists are calling for a thorough investigation of all circumstances, including the conditions of the man's detention in the TCC, his condition before detention, and possible stress factors that could have triggered a heart attack. For now, final conclusions will only be made after the completion of all investigative actions.

Context: a series of incidents in TCCs

The death in the Korosten TCC is not an isolated case. In recent months, several similar incidents have been recorded across Ukraine, where conscripts died after staying in TCCs. For example, a 52-year-old man died in Kremenchuk, and another citizen in Zakarpattia, whose death caused a wide resonance and led to raids in more than 100 TCCs across the country.

The General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are conducting large-scale inspections aimed at identifying possible abuses, human rights violations, and conditions of detention for conscripts. These incidents increase public pressure on the authorities and require transparency and accountability from TCCs and law enforcement agencies.

The public reacts to such cases with indignation and concern. Relatives of the deceased demand full transparency of the investigation and justice. Human rights organizations are calling for independent monitoring of TCC activities and strengthening control over the conditions of detention for conscripts.
