A sensational criminal case involving the death of a pet is unfolding in Kyiv. A resident of the "Teremky" district has become a suspect in a criminal investigation after leaving his French Bulldog on a balcony on a hot day. According to law enforcement, the animal died from heatstroke.
Neighbor's Alarm and the Investigation's Version
The incident occurred in one of the capital's residential complexes. A local resident contacted the police after noticing a dog on the balcony of a 37-year-old man's apartment. It was a day of intense heat, and the pet, named Rafik, was left under direct sunlight for a long time without access to water or shade.
Officers of the National Police of Ukraine confirmed that the owner left the animal in an enclosed space outdoors. As a result of exposure to extremely high temperatures, the bulldog died.
Criminal Liability
Investigators from the Holosiiv Police Department, acting under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor's office, gathered sufficient evidence. The suspect has been officially notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
This article provides for liability for cruelty to animals resulting in their death. The legal sanction is severe: committing such an act is punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to three years.
Context of Animal Rights Protection in Ukraine
This case once again highlights issues regarding the responsibility of pet owners. Previously, society discussed initiatives allowing pets to be inherited through wills, as well as legislative restrictions on keeping certain types of animals in apartments. The case of Rafik clearly demonstrates that irresponsible treatment of animal life in Ukraine leads to real criminal liability.
