A new attack on civilian infrastructure has occurred in Sumy. A Russian 'Shahed' kamikaze drone, which attacked the railway station area, was shot down directly over the building. The debris fell onto a passenger train standing at the station, causing a fire.
According to the press service of 'Ukrzaliznytsia', the strike hit train No. 143, traveling on the Sumy — Rakhiv route. As a result of the falling debris, the roof of the last carriage of the train caught fire.
Fortunately, there were no casualties. At the time of the attack, the passengers and the train crew were in a shelter, so no one was injured.
The train has already departed, however, the journey is proceeding with a significant delay — about five hours. Representatives of the railway company stated that they are doing everything possible to make up for the schedule delay.
Series of attacks on railway hubs
The incident in Sumy became part of an ongoing series of strikes on Ukraine's railway infrastructure. This is not the first attack on rolling stock in recent times.
Here is the chronology of recent attacks:
- May 30: In Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces struck infrastructure and trains. As a result, a locomotive engineer died, and two railway workers were injured.
- Recent events in the Sumy region: In the city of Shostka, the station building was destroyed by a direct hit from dozens of kamikaze drones. Station infrastructure was damaged.
- April 13: In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the strike hit near a freight train locomotive. Thanks to timely evacuation, there were no casualties.
The events in Sumy clearly demonstrate that railway hubs remain priority targets for attacks, despite the fact that in most cases, lives are saved thanks to the warning system and shelters.
