On July 10, 2026, a serious aviation incident occurred over North Macedonia that narrowly avoided tragedy. A Boeing 737-800 passenger airliner operated by the Irish airline Ryanair, flying flight FR-4932 from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, was forced to make an emergency landing at the departure airport. The cause was an instantaneous cabin decompression triggered by the shattering of a window at an altitude of approximately 6,000 meters.

There were more than 170 people on board. As a result of the incident, one passenger sustained injuries; however, thanks to the actions of the crew and those nearby, more serious consequences were avoided.

Timeline of events: from takeoff to emergency descent

The incident occurred in the early morning, shortly after the aircraft reached cruising altitude. According to data from the Greek broadcaster ERT and the dpa agency, the cause of the window failure lies in mechanical damage. A fragment of the skin or a technological element, detached from the pylon of the right engine, struck the fuselage, leading to decompression.

In the cabin, the emergency oxygen supply system activated instantly. The airflow generated at the moment of the rupture partially pushed a 61-year-old Serbian citizen, seated by the damaged window, into the resulting opening. The situation was critical, but nearby passengers managed to hold the victim and prevent him from falling out of the plane until the crew began the emergency descent procedure.

Consequences for passengers and the status of the injured

The aircraft commander declared a distress signal (Mayday) and successfully landed the plane at Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport. The injured man was promptly taken to the hospital. According to medical services, there is no threat to his life. Doctors diagnosed a barotrauma and soft tissue hematomas.

The remaining passengers of flight FR-4932 were transported to Germany on a replacement aircraft. Due to the need to organize a replacement aircraft, the flight was delayed by six hours.

Official position and start of the investigation

Ryanair's press office confirmed the fact of a technical incident and decompression at an early stage of the flight. However, the airline's management refrained from detailed comments regarding the cause of the engine part detachment, citing the need to complete specialized expert examinations.

The investigation is being conducted by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Safety Authority (AAIASB) jointly with international inspectors. As part of the investigation, experts must establish:

  • The degree of wear of the fastening elements of the powerplant.
  • Compliance of the aircraft with EASA directive maintenance regulations.

In accordance with Annex 13 of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, any incident involving the destruction of structural elements during flight is subject to mandatory technical investigation with the involvement of representatives of the developer (Boeing) and the state of registration of the operator.
