World Athletics has published the official calendar for the prestigious Diamond League track and field series for 2027. The upcoming competitive season promises to be action-packed, traditionally gathering the world's top sports stars on running tracks and jumping sectors, including the Ukrainian elite led by Olympic champion Yaroslava Maguchikh.
Calendar Structure and Geography of Stages
According to the organization's published regulations, the new Diamond League season will consist of 14 points-scoring stages spanning multiple continents. The traditional start of the series is scheduled for May 7 in Doha, the capital of Qatar. Afterward, the caravan of elite athletes will head to Asia, where the competitions will be hosted by the Chinese cities of Shanghai and Xiamen.
Next, the tournament will move to the European region, opening a series of events at the end of May in Rome. The organizers have also scheduled stages in other parts of the world, including one tournament in Rabat, Africa (Morocco), and Eugene, North America (USA). The large-scale distribution of prestigious trophies will conclude with a two-day grand final in Zurich, Switzerland, held on August 25–26.
Historical Context and the Ukrainian Trace
Recall that the Diamond League was established in 2010 to replace the legendary Golden League, which held sell-out events from 1998 to 2009. The competition program covers nine running and seven technical disciplines for both men and women, with each individual discipline represented at only half of the 14 qualifying stages, making every meet critically important for scoring points.
For Ukrainian athletics, this tournament is of historical significance: domestic athletes have won the coveted diamond trophies six times. The absolute leader among Ukrainians is Yaroslava Maguchikh, who boasts three consecutive victories in the high jump (2022, 2023, and 2024). In addition, league winners in various years included Olha Saladukha (2011), Bohdan Bondarenko (2013), and Andriy Protsenko (2019).
