The Diia platform has received another feature expansion: from this moment on, the ability to submit a marriage registration application in a remote format is available not only to Ukrainians who have never been married before, but also to those who have lost their spouse and intend to start a new family. Prior to this update, people in such a situation had to personally visit the State Registration Service (GRAGS) offices, collect paper certificates of their former partner's death, and wait in queues. Now the entire procedure is fully digitized and does not require physical presence at government institutions.
How the automatic status check works
The key innovation is that the Diia system automatically cross-checks the applicant's data against the State Register of Civil Status Acts. If the register contains a record of the previous spouse's death, the app opens up the option to submit an application for a new marriage online, without any additional action from the user. The main condition is that the death information must be entered into the register. If the corresponding record is missing, the system will not allow the procedure to proceed, and the user will first have to restore the documentary confirmation. There is no longer any need to collect paper certificates or go to GRAGS in person: Diia automatically retrieves the necessary data and verifies it against the state databases.
Ceremony in video format and digital signature
After submitting the application, the couple schedules a specific date and time for the ceremony, which takes place in video format. When both partners express their consent to the marriage, their declaration of will is sealed with a qualified electronic signature via the Diia.Sign service. The marriage registration record should appear in the app's personal cabinet within one day after the ceremony. A paper marriage certificate can be ordered with home delivery via Ukrposhta — this allows you to completely eliminate the need to visit the registration office.
Context: digitization of family law in Ukraine
The expansion of online marriage capabilities in Diia is part of a broader strategy to digitize family law services in Ukraine. Previously, as reported by RBC-Ukraine, Ukrainians who registered their marriage through Diia gained the ability to order the delivery of a marriage certificate abroad; this service is gradually covering 48 countries. In addition, from the first quarter of 2026, online divorce has become available through the platform, with certain conditions set for remote divorce: the spouses must not have any common minor children. Thus, Diia is turning into a single digital window for the full cycle of family law relations — from marriage to its dissolution.
