Scandal Threatening Diplomatic Relations

A serious diplomatic conflict has erupted between Warsaw and Kyiv, triggered by a decision from the Ukrainian leadership. Polish President Karol Nawrocki harshly criticized Volodymyr Zelensky for awarding an honorary title to one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The incident escalated into a deep crisis, provoking official demands to annul the decree and threatening serious political consequences for the relations between the two countries.

The Core of the Conflict: The Decree and Warsaw's Reaction

The trigger for the escalation was a decision made at the end of May. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree assigning the honorary title "named after the Heroes of the UPA" to the Separate Special Operations Center "North" of the SSO of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The document justified this as being done "to restore the historical traditions of the national army".

The reaction from the Polish leader was immediate. Karol Nawrocki perceived Kyiv's decision extremely negatively. In his statement, he emphasized that glorifying the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which from Poland's perspective bears responsibility for the Volhynian Massacre, is proof of Ukraine's mental unreadiness to join the European family.

Ultimatum and Threat of Revoking the Award

The Polish side moved to decisive action. Nawrocki initiated the procedure to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle — the highest state award of Poland, which was presented to the Ukrainian leader in 2023.

The Office of the Polish President issued an ultimatum, stating that it "gives Zelensky a little more time." Warsaw expects a personal call from the Ukrainian leader to Nawrocki and official apologies. Furthermore, the Polish leadership has taken the discussion of this issue to international platforms to explain the reasons for their outrage to Western partners.

Kyiv's Position: Refusal to Concede

Despite the harsh pressure, the Ukrainian side does not plan to change its decision. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the SSO structures have taken a firm stance. Kyiv asserts that for modern Ukrainian military personnel, the image of the UPA symbolizes exclusively historical resistance to Soviet imperial and Moscow policy.

Official Kyiv emphasizes that these symbols are not directed against modern Poland. The Ukrainian leadership views Warsaw's historical claims as an element of internal political pressure. Notably, criticism of Kyiv also came from the more moderate Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, but this did not affect the position of the Ukrainian leadership.
