In Paris, amidst tense discussions within the European Union, a significant statement was made that could alter the course of European diplomacy. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev openly called on Europe to stop adopting a wait-and-see approach and to take the lead in negotiations with Moscow regarding the cessation of the war in Ukraine.
Europe Must Become the Leader
According to the Bulgarian Prime Minister, the current strategy has reached a dead end. Radev told journalists that he would be pleased if Europe agreed not just to initiate dialogue but to lead this process. For him, this is not merely a diplomatic move but a key mission for the Old World that cannot be delayed.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that initiatives previously coming from the United States have effectively stalled. The escalation of tensions in the Middle East and the conflict in Iran have diverted the attention of the American administration, including President Donald Trump, from the Ukrainian issue. In this vacuum, Russia continues to insist on its conditions, including full control over the Donbas, making the EU's inaction even more risky.
Fear of a Nuclear Scenario
Rumen Radev, who previously held the office of President of the country and was often criticized for his "pro-Kremlin" sentiments, voiced concerns shared by many in Europe. He is worried about betting on victory over the largest nuclear power solely through conventional weapons.
"I am personally concerned by Europe's desire to achieve victory over Russia without the ability to intercept and counter modern hypersonic weapon systems," he emphasized before meeting with Emmanuel Macron. This argument is becoming increasingly weighty against the backdrop of the US considering reducing its participation in NATO structures, shifting the responsibility for the continent's defense onto European allies.
A New Round of Diplomacy
Calls to resume dialogue are being heard more frequently in Europe. Advisors to the French leader have already visited Moscow, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb has acknowledged that the time for talking to Russia is gradually approaching. Meanwhile, Ukraine, understanding the need for reinforcement, is launching drone production outside its borders in partnership with Norway, Germany, and Romania, preparing for a prolonged confrontation.
