The Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which became the primary target of a massive attack by Russian drones, has already undergone the initial stage of conservation. The building is now reliably protected from adverse weather conditions, allowing the destruction of this historical monument to be halted. Currently, Ukrainian authorities are preparing a detailed plan for the full restoration of the temple.
Completion of conservation work
This was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his official Telegram channel. The head of state confirmed that the most damaged part of the cathedral has already been covered with a new roof. This decision was made to prevent further deterioration of the building due to weather conditions.
According to the President's statement, the task of subsequent restoration will fall to the relevant authorities. In particular, responsibility for the restoration has been assigned to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
International support and funding
A key aspect of the restoration will be the attraction of funds from international partners. Zelenskyy emphasized that the relevant agreements were reached during recent diplomatic meetings. In particular, during negotiations with the President of Switzerland, the parties agreed on support for the initial steps of restoration.
"It is important that the full result is duly ensured," added the Ukrainian leader, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to the revival of the holy site.
Chronicle of the attack and consequences
Recall that extensive damage was inflicted on the night of June 15, 2026. Russian occupiers carried out a targeted strike on the historic center of Kyiv, where the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the "Mystetskyi Arsenal" are located. According to the SBU, "Geran-2" drones — the Russian version of Iranian "Shahed" kamikaze drones — were used for the attack.
An enemy drone hit the center of the building's roof around 1:30 in the morning. As a result of the impact, a fire covering 800 square meters broke out. The fire seriously damaged the wooden structures of the dome and the upper tiers of the vault. Debris from the UAV's fuselage and engine was found in the Stefanovsky chapel of the Dormition Cathedral.
Despite the enemy's calculation to completely destroy the unique interior of the temple, the religious structure was saved. Rescuers and restorers managed to prevent the total loss of one of the main symbols of Ukrainian culture and faith.
