A real battle for gold erupted in Zagreb in the women's high jump. World record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh secured her third consecutive international victory since the start of the summer season, confirming her status as one of the strongest athletes in the world. However, the path to the podium was not easy this time and was accompanied by intense tactical struggle.
Strategy and drama at 1.97 meters
The competition began with an interesting move: the Ukrainian and the titled Australian Eleanor Patterson skipped the first heights, starting immediately with the bar at 1.90 meters. Both athletes cleared this height on their first attempt, setting a high tempo from the very beginning.
Next, Yaroslava skipped 1.93 m, but at the 1.95 m mark, she once again demonstrated her class, clearing the bar on her first jump, while her competitors required more attempts. The real drama unfolded at the height of 1.97 meters. Mahuchikh's first two attempts were unsuccessful.
The situation became critical: Yaroslava's main rival, Angelina Topych, skipped this height, strategically moving the bar higher. However, on the third and final attempt, the Ukrainian cleared the bar, guaranteeing herself first place. Already in the status of champion, Mahuchikh attacked the height of 2.01 meters, but failed to conquer it this time.
Winner's emotions and colleagues' results
After the performance, Yaroslava shared her emotions about the victory:
«I jumped 1.97 m. I think it was a good attempt. I know I can jump higher. It's always different to compete outside the stadium. I saw many Ukrainians – it was very pleasant and warm for me».
Two Ukrainians competed in the sector in Zagreb. For Iryna Herashchenko, the tournament went less successfully. She confidently cleared the heights of 1.75, 1.80, and 1.85 meters on the first attempt. However, the bar at the 1.90 m mark did not submit to Iryna, which caused her to finish the competition in 9th place.
Separately, it is worth noting the performance of the Guinean athlete Fatoumata Balli, who sensationally cleared 1.93 m, updating her country's national record.
