A drifting naval mine was discovered off the coast of Odessa in the Black Sea. The dangerous munition was promptly destroyed by the Ukrainian Naval Forces, preventing potential casualties and damage to shipping.
Neutralization Operation
According to information published by RBC-Ukraine, citing an official statement from the Naval Forces on Facebook, the mine was detected during routine monitoring of the sea area. As soon as the object was identified, a demining team was immediately dispatched to the scene.
The munition was destroyed by controlled detonation. The military emphasized that all actions were carried out with the strictest safety measures. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the specialists, the potential threat to both civilian shipping and people on the shore was completely eliminated.
Reasons for the mine's appearance
The Naval Forces press service reminded that the level of mine danger in the Black Sea remains critically high in the context of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Natural factors play a significant role in the movement of munitions: storms and strong sea currents can dislodge anchored mines from their positions.
As a result, such objects begin to drift over significant distances, becoming an unpredictable threat to merchant vessels, fishing boats, and beachgoers.
Appeal to citizens
The military is issuing a categorical warning to the population: do not approach any suspicious objects found in the water or on the coast. If such objects are discovered, it is necessary to report them to the relevant services immediately.
Independent contact with explosive objects or attempts to move them are strictly prohibited and can be fatal.
History of incidents
This is not the first case of drifting mines being discovered in the Odessa region. Previously, the media has reported on similar incidents, which regularly create a tense situation in the region. Unfortunately, there have been tragic cases where people died on beaches as a result of encountering explosive objects that washed ashore.
