The night peace of the city of Galați was disrupted not just by a loud bang, but by a real fire. A Russian drone, breaching the airspace, crashed into a residential high-rise, igniting the roofs and terrifying the residents. However, the consequences of this incident go far beyond extinguishing the fire and repairing the facades. In Bucharest, they are already talking about the most serious diplomatic step — the activation of Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
From Fire to Diplomacy
The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Cîrstea, did not mince words. According to her, the crash of a drone onto a civilian object is a classic case where allies must urgently sit down at the negotiating table. Article 4 of NATO is a "rapid response" mechanism to security threats against any member of the alliance. If any partner feels danger, the others are obliged to listen and discuss actions.
"The incident last night falls into the category of events justifying the use of such tools," emphasized the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is not just a formality. It is a signal to the entire bloc: the border is under threat, and the reaction must be collective.
Who Makes the Decision?
The final word belongs to the President of Romania, Nicolae Ciucă. He is authorized to convene the National Security Council (CSAT) and officially announce consultations with allies. Oana Cîrstea confirmed that discussions are already underway, and the president is expected to make a statement within the day.
It is important to understand: Article 4 does not mean an automatic military response (that is Article 5), but it triggers a mechanism for urgent consultations. The NATO Secretary General has already received all the information, and Romanian authorities are in constant contact with partners.
Diplomatic Response to Moscow
Parallel to military and political talks, a diplomatic game is underway. The Russian Ambassador to Romania has already been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — first due to Moscow's statements about missions in Ukraine, and now, probably, due to the drone incident. Cîrstea promised that this issue would be revisited within the day with "answers at the diplomatic level".
The drone crash in Galați is not just an emergency. It is a stress test for NATO and a warning to Moscow: violating the alliance's borders entails not only fires but also serious political consequences.
