At night in Romania, an incident occurred that once again highlighted the risks associated with modern aerial warfare. In the city of Galați, located near the Ukrainian border, a drone crashed into a residential apartment building. The impact hit an apartment on the 10th floor, causing a powerful explosion and subsequent fire.
Timeline of Events
The alarm signal was received at approximately 02:42 AM. At this time, Russian drones were launching massive strikes on the Odesa region of Ukraine, leading local media and Romanian residents to suspect that one of the "shot down" or off-course devices had entered the country. Authorities had preliminarily warned the population about the possibility of objects falling from the sky, but reality turned out to be harsher than the forecasts.
Romania's Emergency Response Service (ISU) promptly confirmed the incident. Firefighters, police, and specialized teams from the Information and Protection Service (SRI) arrived at the scene. Fortunately, a tragedy was avoided: two residents in the burning apartment evacuated themselves.
Consequences and Investigation
The fire was quickly extinguished by rescue workers. According to updated information, two injured people suffered abrasions and were hospitalized at the scene. There were no fatalities, but property damage and psychological tension in the city are evident.
An investigative team has already begun its work. The commission includes employees of the Criminal Investigation Directorate and the National Institute of Forensics under the General Police Inspectorate of Romania. Their task is to determine the exact nature of the object's fall and the causes of the incident.
This is not the first case of airspace violation in Romania during the conflict. Previously, on the night of May 2, the country was forced to scramble F-16 fighters in response to the intrusion of a Russian drone. Back in April, drone debris was found in Romania, damaging infrastructure. The incident in Galați confirms that the combat zone continues to affect neighboring countries, requiring them to maintain heightened readiness and coordinate their actions.
