The night in Galați, Romania, became a turning point for regional security. A Russian drone, breaching the airspace, crashed into a residential building, turning peaceful sleep into a nightmare. This incident went far beyond a local event: it became a catalyst for a harsh reaction from NATO, the European Union, and Kyiv itself.
Emergency Mobilization: Romania is Not Waiting
Romanian President Nicușor Dan did not delay his response. He immediately convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense and held telephone talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The tone of the statements was unprecedentedly harsh: Bucharest called Moscow's actions an unacceptable violation of sovereignty and a direct challenge to the security of the alliance's citizens.
"Full responsibility lies with the Russian Federation," emphasized Dan, pointing to a complete disregard for international law. Romanian authorities made it clear: aggression against Ukraine can no longer remain a "risk zone" only for neighbors; the threat has become global.
Kyiv's Perspective: Defending Ukraine is Defending Europe
The reaction from Kyiv was instant and consistent. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiga stated directly that the drone explosion in the residential district of Galați proved the reality of the threat to the entire Black Sea region. According to him, this is not a coincidence, but a logical consequence of escalation.
Sybiga called for stricter sanctions and pressure on the RF, but emphasized the strategic aspect: strengthening Ukraine's air defense is not just a matter of Kyiv's survival, but a way to reduce risks for neighbors. "Protecting our country means protecting Europe as well," summarized the minister.
Technical Truth: "Geran-2" Instead of "Shahed"
It is important to note that initial reports about a "Shahed" type drone were corrected. After inspecting the debris, the Romanian Ministry of Defense officially confirmed: an Iranian "Geran-2" drone crashed into the house. This does not change the essence of the incident, but clarifies the enemy's tactics — the use of cheap, mass-produced, and hard-to-detect drones.
Not the First Case: A Worrying Trend
This incident is not isolated. On May 16, an unexploded unguided rocket was found in the village of Părdina, near the Ukrainian border. Deminers had to be called in then. Now, however, the strike hit a major city, and the international community's reaction has become much more decisive.
The situation in Romania is a signal for all of Europe: the war in Ukraine is no longer limited to its borders. And if Moscow continues to ignore the sovereignty of its neighbors, the response will be not only diplomatic but also military.
