A major transport collapse has erupted in the resort city of Sochi. Due to drone attacks, the operations of the city's International Airport have been blocked, leaving thousands of tourists trapped. The situation at the resort's air gateway has remained critical for several days in a row, turning travel into a test of survival.
Collapse at the air gateway
According to the airport press service and information from the Astra channel, the situation at the facility has gotten out of control. The online boards of the terminals show a picture of mass failures: dozens of departing and arriving flights are either delayed or completely cancelled. Throughout the crisis, airport operations were restored for only 8 minutes, which is a drop in the bucket for thousands of waiting passengers.
A huge crush has formed inside the terminals. There are no free seats left in the waiting areas, and passengers have been forced to sleep on the floor. Witnesses report that people are using their own towels and tourist mats as bedding, trying to alleviate their situation in any way possible.
Official version versus reality
Despite the obvious chaos and mass dissatisfaction among citizens, the official press service of the airport is trying to downplay the scale of the problem. In their statements, terminal representatives claim that the situation is calm and under full control. "The airline and airport services are working in an enhanced mode to stabilize the schedule. All operations are being carried out in normal mode," the press service reports, ignoring footage of hundreds of people lying on the floor.
The administration cites optimistic statistics: allegedly, since the start of the day, 109 flights (nearly 10,000 passengers) were received and 102 flights (8,500 people) were dispatched. Passengers are advised to follow announcements and monitor the online boards, but the real queues tell a different story.
Failure of the air defense system against Putin's statements
The events in Sochi unfolded against the backdrop of loud statements by Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Recently, he claimed that a full-fledged air defense system has been created in Russia, while Ukraine only has its individual elements. At the same time, Putin admitted that individual long-range drones are still capable of breaking through Russian defenses.
However, the reality of recent days refutes the thesis of the hermetic nature of Russian air defense. Ukrainian forces regularly demonstrate the ability to strike targets in the deep rear of the enemy, overcoming defense lines at distances of more than 1,000 kilometers.
A striking example was the attack on June 3 on the oil terminal in the port of St. Petersburg. As a result of drone strikes, a massive fire broke out there, engulfing oil tanks. On the same day, long-range drones hit the Russian corvette "Boykiy" in a dry dock in Kronstadt. The ship, which was under repair and servicing tankers of the "shadow fleet," was hit, which was subsequently confirmed by satellite imagery.
