DTEK distribution system operators have implemented an innovative approach to infrastructure planning using advanced digital twin technologies. Through virtual copies of energy systems, detailed five-year development plans for distribution grids were created for key regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kyiv region, Odesa region, and Dnipropetrovsk region.
Digital Modeling and Future Technologies
The application of digital twins allows engineers and analysts to simulate the performance of complex energy equipment over a five-year horizon. This approach makes it possible to identify potential infrastructure vulnerabilities in advance and compare various grid development scenarios under different load levels. The created mathematical models take into account critical contemporary factors: projected growth in overall energy consumption, connection of new customers, active development of distributed and renewable generation, and the current technical condition of operating energy facilities.
Investments and Strategic Goals
According to the developed long-term plans, the volume of necessary investments in the modernization and expansion of power grids will reach up to 24 billion hryvnias. These funds will be allocated for the construction of new power lines and substations, deep reconstruction of outdated equipment, as well as large-scale grid automation and the installation of smart meters. As noted by DTEK Grids Operating Director Sharunas Kirlis, virtual modeling helps verify the economic and technical effectiveness of future decisions even before construction physically begins. The company continues to restore infrastructure following recent damage while maintaining its course toward technological renewal.
