Former Dynamo Kyiv forward Viktor Khlus shared his memories of working under the legendary coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi. In an exclusive interview, he told how the coach's strict discipline and tactical demands radically changed his approach to football, turning an individualist into a team player.

At the beginning of his career at Dynamo, Khlus was used to relying on his own strength, often trying to beat opponents on his own. However, Valeriy Vasylovych quickly made it clear that such a style was unacceptable in his system of coordinates. The coach demanded instant decision-making and the exclusion of unnecessary touches to speed up the team's play.

"We played with two balls": Lobanovskyi's philosophy

Viktor Khlus recalls the coach's famous phrase: "We played with two balls today. One was with Khlus, and the other was with everyone else." This was a serious signal to the footballer that his individualism was hindering the development of the overall attack. Under pressure from the coach and experienced partners, Khlus began to improve his game through interaction with teammates.

Total football and physical power

Lobanovskyi was a true innovator who introduced the principles of total football based on intensive pressing and collective ball recovery in all areas of the field. Khlus emphasizes that this required phenomenal physical readiness and strict discipline from the players. The coach personally selected performers capable of performing a colossal amount of work from flank to flank, which became the hallmark of Dynamo at that time.

Although the transition to team play limited the development of some personal qualities, Khlus admits that it was this approach that allowed him to reach a new professional level. His experience is a classic example of a player's transformation under the influence of a great strategist, where the footballer's personality was completely subordinate to the success of the system.
