One of the world's most influential promoters, Eddie Hearn, has given a harsh assessment of British boxer Conor Benn's chances of winning the upcoming title fight. According to the founder of Matchroom Boxing, his former protégé's chances of success against Ryan Garcia are close to minimal.
The main event of the evening, scheduled for September 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, is set to be the first defense of the WBC welterweight world title for the American Garcia. However, Hearn is convinced that the American is the favorite and has cited specific reasons why the British fighter might not be able to handle the task.
Weight Issues and Loss of Punching Power
According to Hearn, the key factor is the difficulty of making the weight class. The welterweight limit is 147 pounds (66.68 kg), and the promoter believes this is a serious challenge for Benn at the moment.
"I like this fight, but I don't think Conor should be fighting at welterweight right now. After two fights with Chris Eubank Jr. at middleweight, and then a fight with Regis Prograis at a catchweight, he didn't look his best," Hearn stated.
The expert predicts that returning to a lighter division will affect the Briton's physical condition. "Making this weight will be very difficult for him right now. He trains well, but I don't think he will maintain his punching power at this weight. I also doubt how well he will take a punch," Hearn noted.
