Ukraine's top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, continues her confident march towards her main goal of the season — Wimbledon. At the WTA 500 grass tournament in Berlin (German Open), the Ukrainian convincingly defeated German player of Ukrainian origin, Eva Lys, to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Replaying the Stuttgart Scenario
For Svitolina, currently ranked eighth in the world, this was the second personal meeting with Lys. Their first match took place just two months ago at the clay court tournament in Stuttgart. There was no suspense then: Elina won with a score of 6:1, 6:0. This time, the match was again dictated by the Ukrainian, although her opponent tried to resist.
In the first set, Svitolina took a 5:1 lead with two break points. Despite her opponent's attempts to force a fight, the set ended in half an hour with a score of 6:3. In the second set, with the score at 2:2, the Ukrainian finished off her opponent, winning four games in a row — 6:2.
Details of the Deciding Game
The final game was the longest, lasting 14 rallies. Elina returned the game to "deuce" four times and converted her first match point.
Outstanding Statistics
This success allowed Svitolina to achieve an outstanding statistical milestone — the Ukrainian will reach her 90th quarterfinal in her career at the Tour level. For her, this is already the eighth quarterfinal in 2026 and the sixth overall on grass. Interestingly, the last time Elina reached this stage on grass was at Wimbledon 2024.
The Next Step
The Ukrainian tennis player's next opponent will be determined in the clash between the world's second-ranked player, Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, and the Filipino Alexandra Eala. This match will take place on June 18 and will start no earlier than 18:30 Kyiv time.
The total prize fund for the tournament in the German capital is over $1.2 million. Earlier, it was announced that the legendary Williams sisters will compete at Wimbledon 2026.
