A major energy drama is unfolding in the US, triggered by an abnormal heatwave. PJM Interconnection, the country's largest grid operator serving approximately 67 million people, was forced to declare an emergency energy conservation mode. According to RBC-Ukraine citing Reuters, the situation has affected a significant portion of the East Coast and the Midwest.
Emergency Conservation Mode
To prevent a collapse of the power grid, PJM activated emergency demand reduction programs. Restrictions affected both industrial giants and residential consumers who had previously signed relevant contracts. In exchange for reducing load on the grid during critical moments, these market participants receive financial compensation.
According to the operator's representatives, such measures were necessary to increase power reserves and prevent outages during peak demand hours. The main cause of the crisis is prolonged abnormal heat, which led to record energy consumption due to the mass use of air conditioners.
Technical Failures and Overloads
The situation was exacerbated by technical issues: the shutdown of some generating capacity and the overloading of transmission lines. On Thursday evening, the power grid faced a sharp drop in generation, forcing PJM to deploy backup power plants running on fossil fuels. Despite the tension, large-scale blackouts were avoided.
Market Reaction: Prices Skyrocket
The energy crisis immediately reflected on the cost of resources. Spot prices for electricity in the region skyrocketed to incredible levels, exceeding $2,500 per megawatt-hour. For comparison, the usual cost under normal conditions is around $40 per MWh.
Analysts link such a sharp price surge primarily to the overloading of main transmission lines and a significant increase in the cost of delivering electricity to deficit zones.
Weather in Ukraine: Heat Subsides
Against the backdrop of energy problems in the US, a change in weather conditions is expected in Ukraine. After a prolonged period of high temperatures, the heat will begin to recede under the influence of a cold atmospheric front. Thunderstorms and rain are expected to visit most regions of the country in the coming days.
At the same time, climatic conditions will vary by region: warmer weather will persist in the south and east of the country, while in other areas, daytime temperatures will drop to comfortable summer levels.
