An event has occurred in Central Asia's energy sector that vividly demonstrates the fragility and interdependence of infrastructure projects. Kazakhstan was forced to significantly reduce oil production at one of its key fields — Karachaganak. The cause was the shutdown of a gas processing plant in Russia's Orenburg region, which resulted from an attack by unmanned aerial vehicles.
Technological Trap
The Karachaganak field is among the country's top three largest oil and gas projects and accounts for about 10% of national oil production. However, the specific nature of this giant is that oil and natural gas extraction here is a technologically inseparable process. The raw material coming from the depths requires immediate processing, and it is for this purpose that it is sent to the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant (GPP).
The Orenburg GPP, located about 170 kilometers from the Kazakh border, is a strategic facility. It processes about 60% of the gas of the Russian Federation, returning commercial products to Kazakhstan. A malfunction at this enterprise automatically led to a decline in oil production in the neighboring territory.
Scale of Losses
According to official data, the drop in productivity was rapid. Daily oil production at Karachaganak fell from 34,000 to 25,000 tons. This is equivalent to a decrease of more than a quarter, amounting to about 180,000 barrels per day. For a country's economy oriented towards hydrocarbon exports, this is a significant blow, demonstrating the vulnerability of logistics chains to external threats.
Crisis in Russia
The strike on the Orenburg GPP occurred on Wednesday, June 24. This event was just the tip of the iceberg of the problems faced by the Russian energy sector. Alongside attacks on external facilities, Russia faced systemic strikes on its own oil refineries (OR) within the country.
The situation reached a critical point: Russia is experiencing an acute fuel shortage and was forced to appeal to Kazakhstan for urgent supplies of 50,000 tons of AI-92 gasoline. This fact indicates a deep crisis in the aggressor's energy sector, where an energy carrier exporting country finds itself in the role of a fuel importer due to the destruction of its own infrastructure.
