The friendly match between the national teams of Denmark and Ukraine in the city of Odense ended in a tragedy that instantly reshaped the evening's scenario. In the 65th minute of the game, during a non-playing episode, the Danish captain Christian Eriksen lost consciousness on the pitch, repeating the terrifying scenario of Euro 2020. The incident led to the premature termination of the game, but, as it turned out, it saved the Ukrainian national team from losing points in the FIFA ranking.

Festive Atmosphere and Sporting Reality

The match took place in the hometown of Hans Christian Andersen. The Ukrainian diaspora demonstrated incredible support, completely buying out the away section of the stadium. The noise and excitement of the fans surpassed even the atmosphere of the recent match against Poland in Wroclaw. However, the picture on the field was quite different.

The instructions from Andrea Malderi, which the Italian coach emotionally gave to Roman Yaremchuk, Viktor Tsygankov, and Ruslan Malinovskyi before the first goal, did not work. Denmark quickly took the lead — 2:0. A significant role was played by the young talent of "Manchester United" Patrick Dorgu, who scored a precise shot and fought hard with the Ukrainian defender Ivan Zabarnyi. Only towards the end of the first half did Viktor Tsygankov manage to score one goal, restoring hope for a result.

The Minute That Stopped Time

In the 65th minute, the game was interrupted. Christian Eriksen suddenly clutched his heart and collapsed onto the grass. For more than 15 minutes, doctors fought for the footballer's life. Fortunately, the player regained consciousness. To the applause of the entire stadium, Eriksen, leaning on his wife and medical staff, walked to the ambulance on his own.

The Norwegian referee Sigurd Kriststad decided to stop the match. Both teams refused press conferences and flash interviews as a sign of solidarity with the injured player. The final whistle was blown with a score of 2:1 in favor of the hosts.

Saving the Rating: The Legal Aspect

The main consequence of the incident was not only the player's health but also the fate of the Ukrainian national team's rating. According to the official FIFA regulations and the rules of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), a match interrupted due to force majeure and not played to the end receives the status of "not held".

For the calculation of points in the Elo system, only reports on fully played matches (with a final whistle after 90 minutes or a penalty shootout) are accepted. The interim result at the 65th minute is mathematically invalid.

This rule worked in favor of the Ukrainian national team. In the event of a full defeat, the team would have lost the projected 4.33 points. Thanks to the regulations, the balance of the national team remained intact: Ukraine fully retains its pre-June positions in the global hierarchy.

What's Next?

The next official match under the leadership of Andrea Malderi is scheduled for September 25, 2026. This will be an away match against Hungary as part of the new season of the UEFA Nations League. Until then, the team's rating remains stable, despite the sporting defeat in Denmark.
