On Saturday morning, June 27, powerful explosions rocked Volgograd. City residents began reporting loud sounds and columns of smoke rising above the industrial zone. Preliminary data suggests that one of the region's key defense enterprises was targeted.
Rocket alerts in several regions
The events unfolded in the early morning hours. Around 03:50 Kyiv time, reports of rocket danger appeared on social media and Russian Telegram channels. Warnings were issued not only for the Volgograd region but also for residents of the Penza, Orenburg, and Samara regions, as well as the Republic of Tatarstan.
Alongside official and unofficial reports, video footage began circulating online. Footage captured by eyewitnesses shows trails of unidentified rockets in the sky. Other videos record the aftermath of strikes in Volgograd: bright flashes and thick clouds of smoke rising over the city.
Target of the strike: 'Titan-Barrikady' plant
According to OSINT communities (open-source intelligence analysis), the target of the attack was the 'Titan-Barrikady' plant. This is one of the oldest and largest enterprises in Volgograd, specializing in heavy machinery.
The plant plays a critical role in Russia's military-industrial complex. Specifically, launchers, artillery systems, and components for strategic missile complexes are produced at its facilities. The company's product list includes systems significant to the Russian army: 'Iskander-M', 'Yars', and 'Topol-M'.
It is important to note that the 'Titan-Barrikady' plant has been under international sanctions since 2022. The reason for the restrictions was the enterprise's involvement in producing weapons for the Russian army, which are used in combat operations.
Context: a series of strikes on defense facilities
The attack on Volgograd fits into a series of strikes on defense and industrial facilities deep within Russian territory. At the beginning of this week, on June 22, residents of Voronezh reported powerful explosions. It later turned out that Ukrainian forces had attacked the Voronezh Semiconductor Device Plant 'Sborka'.
Also in May of this year, Volgograd was already a target of attacks. On May 29, drones struck one of Russia's largest oil refineries — 'Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka'. As a result of that incident, a fire broke out at the facility, which fire crews had to extinguish.
