On June 9, a serious technological incident occurred at a critical infrastructure facility in Dagestan. Three consecutive explosions rocked the "Mozydok — Kazimagomed" main gas pipeline, resulting in intense flaring. The incident took place in the Kizilyurtovsky district, on a section of the route located between the settlements of Bavgutay and Gelbakh.
Scale of the Fire and Threat to the Population
The rupture of a 1200 mm diameter pipe led to a gas release into the atmosphere and the ignition of an open flame. The height of the fire column reached 15 meters. The roar of the fire was so intense that it was clearly visible to residents of the surrounding areas from several kilometers away.
Particular concern was caused by the proximity of the accident site to residential buildings and a high-risk facility — the local "Methane" gas station. Consequently, emergency services immediately began evacuating the population. A total of about 140 people living in 45 private houses were evacuated from the risk zone. The evacuees were temporarily accommodated with relatives in safe areas.
Operational Liquidation and Status of Victims
Despite the scale of the fire, according to official data from the EMERCOM and local authorities, there were no victims or casualties as a result of the incident. Emergency crews promptly shut off the gas supply to the damaged section of the pipeline, which is more than 50 km long. EMERCOM specialists successfully extinguished the open flaring, containing the situation.
Investigation of Causes
Currently, criminologists and technical specialists from the gas service continue to work at the scene. Their main task is to determine the exact causes that led to the technological rupture of the pipe and to conduct a full assessment of the damage. The fact of three explosions indicates the complexity of the situation, however, final conclusions will only be drawn after the inspection is completed.
