The results of the National Multidisciplinary Test (NMT) are often perceived as the only bridge to the world of higher education. However, failing the exam or having no score at all does not mean that the applicant will have to "lose a year." In 2026, the Ukrainian education system offers several alternative trajectories that allow continuing education immediately after school, bypassing the standard NMT procedures.

Although test results remain a mandatory filter for most bachelor's degree programs, the legislation provides for a number of exceptions and alternative admission formats. We examine the main options that will help you get a diploma without waiting for the next year.

Military universities: exams instead of NMT

One of the most popular directions for those who do not plan to take the NMT remains military higher education institutions. Here, the selection system is built differently: instead of a unified test, applicants take entrance exams directly at the university.

In 2026, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has simplified logistics for applicants by extending the deadline for submitting documents until July 1. This gives candidates additional time to prepare for internal trials and collect the package of documents.

International programs and cooperation

Another interesting vector is joint educational programs. Some private universities offer training in partnership with Polish educational institutions. In such cases, admission is possible based on a school certificate and a successful interview.

It is important to understand the nuances of such a scheme: experts note that this is not a full replacement for the NMT in the long term. After a year of study, students can continue their education at a Ukrainian university, but to obtain a Ukrainian diploma, they will still have to meet the admission requirements that were in effect in the year of application.

Professional colleges: a quick start

For those who want to get a working profession faster, institutions of professional pre-higher education are an ideal option. Admission to a professional college does not require NMT results.

Usually, it is enough to pass an interview or a creative competition, as well as submit a motivation letter, if required by a specific institution. In most cases, admission to state colleges takes place without a competition. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places, the administration may take into account the average grade of the certificate or conduct additional interviews.

Graduates of such programs receive a diploma of a professional junior bachelor. This opens up two opportunities: to immediately enter the labor market or to continue education at a university based on the acquired qualification.

Who can get into university without NMT by law

In addition to alternative formats, there are categories of applicants who have the right to be admitted via an interview or internal trials in accordance with legislative benefits.

Also, without NMT results, persons who already have a higher education can be admitted on a contract basis. This allows specialists to improve their qualifications or change their field of activity without returning to school exams.

The admission campaign-2026 starts on July 1 and will last until October 15. Submission of documents for most universities will take place in online format through electronic cabinets in the Unified State Electronic Database on Education Issues (EGBEO).
