University is not just about lectures, exams, and diplomas. It is a place where personality is formed, friendships are forged, feelings arise, and families are created. At the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" (KPI), this reality is officially recognized — and special dormitories are even provided for young families.

Legacy of the Past and Tasks of the Present

KPI Rector Anatoliy Melnychenko admitted in an interview with RBC-Ukraine that the university has to "sort out" problems accumulated in the past. One of the dormitories was put into operation with a number of technical shortcomings — from water supply to energy management. Efforts had to be made to bring it into order.

However, according to the rector, there is no point in building new buildings — the university already has a "long-established, self-sufficient complex" with enough space for all needs. The main task now is the modernization of existing infrastructure.

Energy Efficiency and Inclusivity

"We definitely plan projects that will make dormitories and the learning environment better and more efficient — first of all from an energy efficiency point of view and from the point of view of inclusivity," emphasized Melnychenko. This means that students with special needs will be able to study and live comfortably, and utility costs will be reduced thanks to modern technologies.

Family Dormitories: Comfort Like in an Apartment

A feature of KPI is the presence of special family dormitories. There, a couple can live "virtually like in a one-room apartment": their own kitchen, bathroom, and individual space. The cost of living is about 3–4 thousand hryvnias per month, which is significantly cheaper than renting housing in the city.

"And here — you live right on the university territory. It takes you 10 minutes to walk to any building. And you have everything," summarized the rector.
