The first stage of the investigation into one of the most tragic accidents in recent times has concluded in the Mykolaiv region. Law enforcement agencies have officially announced that suspicion has been brought against the driver of a Nissan Murano crossover, whose actions led to mass casualties. The incident occurred on the morning of July 4 on the highway connecting Odesa and Mykolaiv.

Chronology of the tragedy

According to the National Police, at the time of the collision, a Mercedes Sprinter minibus was transporting passengers on the Odesa — Mykolaiv route. The situation got out of control when the crossover driver drove onto the oncoming lane. As a result of the head-on impact, the minibus lost stability, overturned, and crashed into a Volvo truck traveling in the same direction.

The scale of the consequences was colossal: 12 people died as a result of the accident, and another 6 injured were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.

Arrest and charges

The driver of the Nissan Murano attempted to flee the scene, but law enforcement officers quickly identified him. As part of a special operation, the man was detained. Currently, the Office of the Prosecutor General has officially notified the suspect of the charges brought against him.

The legal qualification of his actions cites Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of road safety rules resulting in the death of several persons. At present, the issue of selecting a preventive measure in the form of detention is being resolved.
